Melbourne Shopping & Best Shopping in Melbourne

Melbourne Shopping

Australia’s Fashion Capital has all the usual suspects in the form of major department stores, chain stores, and big name boutiques.

But it’s the great outlet shopping, designer fashion, quirky markets, and off-the-radar purveyors of indie style that really set Melbourne apart from other Australian cities.

Here’s a round-up of places to get great value and to experience Melbourne shopping at its most interesting, eye-popping, and unique.

Melbourne Shopping for Fashion

Chapel Street in South Yarra is regarded by most as THE best street in Oz for the latest and greatest from leading local and international designers. Wear comfortable shoes – this street stretches for kilometres. And don’t miss a side trip to funky little Greville Street off Chapel.

The truly fashion forward take detours to Eliza Baker in High Street (off Chapel) and Grace in Malven Road, Toorak.

Melbourne CBD also does great fashion – especially down the laneways and side streets. Check out INCU in Albert Coates Lane. Whatever you do, don’t miss Elegantly Scant in Degraves Street – their lingerie in vintage fabrics and handmade lace is to die for.

Melbourne Shopping for Bargains

Harbour Town

One of the nicest factory outlet centres in Oz, Harbour Town Shopping Centre is located in the vibrant waterfront Docklands precinct, just a stone’s throw from Melbourne CBD.

Bridge Road, Richmond

This is where the designer brands and some top high street brands have their outlet stores, including Anthea Crawford, Witchery, Portmans and Sportsgirl.

Smith Street, Collingwood

Run here for sportswear and outdoors wear factory outlets for Nike, Converse, Adidas, MacPac, Kathmandu, amongst others.

Melbourne Shopping For Unique Style

Retrostar upstairs on the corner of Swanston Street and Flinders Lane in the CBD is the biggest vintage store in the Australia. It specialises in out-there outfits from the 1940s to the 1980s, with clothes and accessories sourced from all over the world.

Christine – also in Flinders Lane – has amazing must-have accessories such as designer costume jewellery, beautiful hats and exceptional handbags. This is a Melbourne shopping experience par excellence!

Smart Alec is where modern gentlemen shop for dapper hats sourced from all over the world. Boaters, trilbies, Panamas, bowlers, berets – even top hats. This awesome shop in located in Gertrude Street (along with lots of other cool shops), Fitzroy.

Scally & Trombone in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, is Melbourne’s most gloriously eclectic hat emporium, with a great line of Esther Williams-style bathing suits – with matching bathing caps – and fabulous jewellery thrown in for good measure.

The above two shops are but two of Fitzroy’s quirky stores offering left-of-field fashions and accessories. Go for a wander and be inspired by what the locals are wearing in this Indie fashion enclave.

Also check out Melbourne markets, including fabulous Camberwell Market – Australia’s biggest second-hand market.
