We Australians sure love our beaches, and many of us want to share these beautiful places with our favourite four-legged friends. While many of the country’s beaches are for people only, I’ve managed to hunt out a few of the very best dog-friendly locations. Don’t leave the pooch at home next time you head off on holiday – just make sure you follow my travel tips and head to one of these fantastic areas.
St Kilda Beach, Melbourne, Victoria
Located in the heart of Melbourne, St Kilda Beach is the perfect place to take your pup for a well-deserved swim in the ocean. Dogs are allowed between Brooks Jetty and the northern end of the car park close to St Kilda Marina, so bring down some snacks and toys to get your dog running along the white sand and frolicking in the waves.
This beach is truly iconic, and you’ll love the opportunity to explore its sandy shores with your pet.
St Kilda holiday makers will also love West Beach, which has extensive wide sandy areas for dogs to run around on as well as shallow sandbars to coax your pup into the water. The dog-friendly West Beach Bathers Pavilion cafe is a great place to head after a workout for a cool drink.
Muirs Beach, Coles Bay, Tasmania
Take the dogs to Tassie this year and head to Coles Bay for a beach treat. Located only a kilometre away from Freycinet National Park, Muirs Beach is family-friendly and welcomes dogs to roam its shores. It’s a great place to do a spot of boogie boarding or windsurfing, and you can let your pooch off its leash to run up and down the long stretch of sand. Just make sure you respect the environment and use the bags provided to dispose of any waste, or you may find yourself facing a fine.
Urangan Foreshore, Hervey Bay, Queensland
Hervey Bay is a pet paradise with dog parks and miles of sand for your furry pets to roam. Most of Hervey Bay is an off-leash zone, making it perfect to exercise your dog without the constraints of a lead. From 3pm to 8am, dogs can roam from the Urangan Pier to the aquarium, or from the rock wall south of the harbour to Pulgul Creek. Located on Vista Street between Becks Road and Round Island Road, there’s also a great fenced dog park ideal for the younger puppies to run around in.
Hervey Bay is a perfect place for a holiday, with plenty of accommodation including the five-star pet-friendly Best Western Plus Quarterdecks Retreat within reach of the dog beach.
