The Queen’s Birthday long weekend is fast approaching. I don’t know about you, but it’s a rare chance for me to spend some quality time with my family and friends. A 3-day weekend means I can also plan a spontaneous trip. Here’s four fun activities I’m putting on my long weekend bucket list.
1. Ride the World’s Longest Rollercoaster Zipline
The Central Coast is home to the TreeTop Crazy Rider Xtreme. It’s Australia’s first rollercoaster zipline and it’s also the world’s longest at 1km long.
It’s four times the length of any other zipline in the world. If adrenalin or adventure travel is your thing, you and the family will love visiting this unique attraction in the Ourimbah State Forest. It’s about 40 minutes north of Gosford.
2. Treat your taste buds in the vineyards
The Yarra Valley is one of the most popular wine regions in Australia. It’s known as a romantic getaway or honeymoon destination for newlyweds. But did you know it’s also got pet-friendly wineries, microbreweries, cider farms and family friendly wineries too?
June is Italian Food Month at Best Western Yarra Valley. A one-hour drive east from Melbourne will see you arrive at the Yarra River hotel to taste very best Italian flavours at Oscar’s on the Yarra restaurant. Themed menu ends 30 June.
3. Celebrate everything big
Kids have a big imagination, and Australia has the attractions to match.
Four hours’ drive south of Brisbane, there’s a great tobogganing circuit at the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour. On the way there, don’t avoid Ballina by taking the bypass – if you drive into town, look out for the Big Prawn on top of Bunning’s Warehouse.
The Sunshine Coast has the Big Pineapple. It’s free to enter, and kids will love the small animal farm where they can feed dingoes, a deer, a donkey, alpacas, pigs, chickens, ducks and various birds. Canberra is home to the Giant Mushroom.
4. Climb a volcano in Auckland
Any time of the year, it’s worth visiting Rangitoto Island for a Middle Earth experience you’ll never forget. The Fullers Rangitoto Volcanic Explorer Tour in New Zealand lets you take a 4WD road train through rugged lava crops, native pohutukawa forest and 360-degree views of Auckland city from the top of the mountain.
