Shake off winter with these events happening in five Australian states and territories this September weekend.
Canberra blooms this weekend through to 12 October, with the popular Floriade Australia flower festival starting on Saturday. There’s a Floriade photo contest (share your photos to win a special prize), a big boot camp, and appearances from well-known gardener Charlie Albone; chef Miguel Maestre and more. See the flowers illuminated for Nightfest, a ticketed twilight event from Wednesday 25 September. Spectacular walks of art inspired by Monet and Van Gogh will astound you, set among colourful flowerbeds bathed in light.
With free events and cheap tickets available for music and cinema screenings, the Alice Springs Desert Festival will serve some of the best entertainment for adults and kids this weekend. Dance for 24 hours to raise money for charity at the Alice Springs Todd Mall from 10am Saturday. Watch live performances, hear local musicians and see great OZploitation films, with plenty of fun for the kids starting from 10am on Sunday. Round off the weekend by attending the Cinema By The River to see great Australian film, Red Dog on Sunday night.
The Shannons Insurance Motorcycle Expo, ‘Bikes by the Bay’ returns to the Foreshore Tavern at Lauderdale (Hobart) this weekend. On Sunday 14 September, an interactive expo will delight all motorcycle enthusiasts with its display of veteran, vintage, classic and late model vehicles. The Rotary Club of Lindisfame will be assisting with a sausage sizzle from 11am. If you get hungry again, check out the new lunch menu at the Foreshore Tavern. Also anticipated to attend will be members of the Ulysses Italian, Masonic Motorcycle Riders and Scooter Clubs.
It’s your last chance to see the The Royal Adelaide Show this Sunday. Fairy floss and showbags are still being sold, with some great weekend performances scheduled. North of the Jubilee Pavilion, a new ride, for both children and adults to try, is the Down on the Farm Tractor Ride. Attractions and rides are being extended until midnight this weekend only. Another first for the show this year is Titan the Robot, an entertainment concept combining comedy, street theatre, robotics and high energy music never seen before in Adelaide.
The city of Armadale, 30 minutes drive south of Perth, will don its kilts this weekend for the Perth Kilt Run and Highland Gathering. Get ready to race through picturesque foothills of Minnawarra Park and Sanctuary Lake doing the 5km challenge, or simply join in the fun with the 2.5km leisure run. Everyone from competitive athletes, families and community members are invited to join in the fun from 9am; followed by a day full of everything Scottish including a medieval fair, arts and crafts, activities for the kids and traditional Scottish and Irish dancing.
