Tips for Single Women Travellers

Single women travelling alone, whether it’s for business or leisure, should be cautious about their safety. Here’s some more tips to keep you secure while you’re away in a foreign city.

•    When out and about, minimise the amount of jewellery you wear on your body. Even cheap jewellery can catch the eye of someone eager to turn your jewellery into cash. It’s best to leave it at home rather than tempting a thief.
•    When driving, lock the car doors at all times, even when you’re driving. While some cars do have auto-locking systems when you excel past 20km per hour, most require that you lock the doors yourself. This tiny gesture could prevent a major occurrence.
•    Be alert and aware of what’s going on around you. You should be aware of who’s behind you and beside you and be able to assess if they pose any sort of risk.
•    Carry your money and passport in a money belt hidden under your clothes in areas known for pick-pocketing.
•    Even though it isn’t fair, women have to watch themselves more than men do when they are travelling solo. Explore the nightlife of a new city if you have companions, but don’t head out to bars or wander around the streets of a foreign city after dark alone.
•    Dress according to local customs and sensibilities whether that means wearing long pants, a loose scarf around your head or not flashing too much flesh at the beach. Some places of worship require you to cover your shoulders.
