Saving money while on holiday

Saving money while on holiday!Holidays abroad are expensive, there’s no doubt about it. When you factor in airfares, hotels, vaccinations, visas, transfers and money for meals and souvenirs – the cost is likely to be in the thousands.

There are ways to get more bang for your buck – and it’s all about knowing when and where to book. Best Western hotels offer a global rewards program, giving you 5% off the best available rate at over 200 properties in Australia and New Zealand. Combine that with free membership and earning a point for every US dollar spent, and you’re well on your way to making your holiday affordable. The Best Western website also offers the lowest rate guaranteed, so you’re not likely to get a cheaper deal elsewhere.

Best Western Rewards members also get discounts on car hire through Avis and Budget – so you can save even more money when travelling.

Flying cheap can sometimes be more difficult. You could choose to fly in an off-peak season when flights can be discounted by as much as 50%, but you’ll have to deal with an off-peak season when you arrive at your destination too. This could mean that certain attractions are closed, restaurants close early and the weather is not at its best. The best bet is to book early – take advantage of early-bird specials as the longer you wait, the more expensive your international flight will be. You could also miss out on a seat on the particular date you want to travel.

One of the best ways to save money is through currency exchange. Monitor the fluctuations in currency daily before your holiday at banks, currency exchange kiosks like Travelex and the Post Office. These things change on a daily basis - but don't just look at the headline exchange rate - most charge a fee or commission (and often it is hidden). Ask them for a quote - it takes them only a couple of seconds. Then go with the outlet that gives you more for your money.

One thing you shouldn’t scrimp on is travel insurance. If you can’t afford to insure yourself against injury or accident, you really can’t afford to go on holiday. The Australian Government strongly advises travellers to take out comprehensive travel insurance. You should make sure it covers all medical expenses for injury or illness, as well as theft of valuables, damage to baggage, and cancellations or interruptions to flight plans. It will save you worry and a possible financial burden. Shop around when choosing an insurance policy and make sure the cover provided suits your family’s needs and is valid for the whole time you and your family will be away.

Of course the best way to save money is by researching and planning. Knowing where you can scrimp when you reach your destination – whether it be free museums, walking tours, or simply catching public transport instead of hiring a car – can all save you money.
