Green Trees and Waterfalls Among the Bushfires
Now the Victorian bushfires are under control, several green sanctuaries, untouched by the fires, are being rediscovered. The town of Beechworth, perched in the beautiful Victorian high country, is one of those gems.
“The town is still as beautiful as ever,” says Robert Ransom, proprietor of the Best Western Beechworth Motor Inn. “The nearest damage is more than four kilometres away, so you don’t even see bushfire damage from Beechworth,” Mr Ransom says.
An idyllic location for a short break, Beechworth is surrounded with stunning natural beauty such as waterfalls, mountains, deep gorges, while walking through the town is like steeping back in time. Beechworth township is full of beautiful colonial sandstone buildings, wide streets and many cafes and gourmet attractions including the famous Beechworth Bakery, Beechworth Honey and the Beechworth Sweet Company – only a short drive from local wineries.
Normally busy with tourists at this time of the year, Beechworth is much quieter of late – an extra blessing for guests seeking a quiet getaway – as travellers mistakenly think the town is fire damaged. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” Mr Ransom says. “All businesses and attractions are still operating here as normal,” he says.
To entice people back to the area, Mr Ransom has set up a special promotion at his motel called the Discover Beechworth package. Guests who book at the Best Western Beechworth Motor Inn now receive a free Continental breakfast for two people, a bottle of wine on arrival, a two- course lunch for two, a two-course dinner for two and a free p[ass to the Beechworth Historical Precinct.
“We love having people down here,” Mr Ransom says, “to show them how beautiful Beechworth really is.”
