Here are our must-visit regions in the Northern Territory.
Darwin
Darwin is a far-flung, laid-back, multi-cultural city famous for its vibrant markets and wacky festivities such as the
Beer Can Regatta (where punters have a go at racing boats made from beer cans). Boasting great asian cuisine and an enormous natural harbour complete with funky bars, restaurants and cafes, Darwin is full of exciting things to see and do.
Darwin is also the ideal base from which to explore the World Heritage-listed Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks and the exotic Tiwi Islands. And of course, no one can visit Darwin without paying homage to one of nature’s oldest and fiercest beasts – experience crocodiles close up in the local wildlife parks, and in the recently launched Cage of Death at Crocosaurus Cove.

Katherine
Most visitors to Katherine are there for the spectacular same-name gorge that was carved through ancient sandstone by the Katherine River. Katherine also plays host in late July or early August to an event called ‘Walking With Spirits’. This ancient Aboriginal tradition of corroboree is shared with visitors while they enjoy the stunning beauty of Malkgulumbu (Beswick Falls) – a sacred site not normally accessible to the general public. Puppetry, imagery, fire and music are all used to convey concepts within the traditional dances, presented by four very different Arnhem Land tribes.

Alice Springs
Many people don’t know that Alice, as locals fondly call her, was once called Stuart. In 1929, Stuart was finally connected to the rest of Australia by a railway to Adelaide and on August 30, 1933, the town’s name of Stuart was officially changed to Alice Springs. The name originated because the settlement included what was thought to be a permanent waterhole in the normally dry Todd River, named Alice Springs after the wife of the former Postmaster General of South Australia, Sir Charles Todd. Every year in August, the Todd River hosts the Henley on Todd Regatta, which turns the dry, sandy bed of the river into a race track for boats propelled towards the finish line by the sheer will, might and feet of their creators.
