Darling Harbour
Darling Harbour is home to the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre where major industry-specific conferences and special events take place. This area is also spoilt with a number of excellent restaurants, stylish bars and shops. There’s an IMAX Theatre and, if you are searching for some tranquillity from the busy city pace, you can take a leisurely stroll through the nearby Chinese Gardens.
Chinatown
A strip of Hong Kong in the heart of the city suburb of Haymarket, Sydney’s Chinatown features a variety of yum-cha restaurants, takeaways, specialty produce stores and other shops. This vibrant region comes alive during the Chinese New Year with dragon boat races, colourful lanterns and spectacular street parades.
Luna Park
Unlike the old 80s advertising slogan that claimed that “Luna Park is just for fun”, Luna Park these days is so much more than just a theme park. Sure, the rickety rides and (slightly sinister) clown-faced entrance are still there but it’s also now a world-class event venue that can cater for a grand wedding or a children’s birthday party, and boasts a great range of cafes and eateries.
Taronga Zoo
Even if you are not a big fan of zoos, Taronga is definitely worth a visit for its amazing, panoramic views of Sydney. Take the sky safari to the top of the zoological park and then wind your way down, dropping in on the exotic residents from the farthest ends of the earth and meeting some local characters as well along the way.
Sydney Olympic Park
Sydney Olympic Park was host to the 2000 Olympic Games. A visit to this impressive complex of world-class sporting venues will no doubt bring back glorious memories of that magical opening ceremony night, the Australian swimming team’s heroic feats in the pool, and who could forget Cathy Freeman’s triumph in the 400m. The site is still used for many major sporting events. The main stadium can seat 110,000 and the complex incorporates an indoor arena, tennis centre, the Sydney International Archery Centre and the Sydney International Aquatic Centre.
