From the cosmopolitan capital city of Melbourne, the hilly Dandenongs, Phillip Island and the vast sweep of Port Phillip Bay are just an hour or so away, while the historic goldfields area around Ballarat and Bendigo is only a little further. With their woodlands, national parks, wildlife, beaches, wineries and rich heritage these regions are ideal destinations for short breaks from the city.One of Australia’s most scenic drives lies in the state’s south – from the New South Wales border to South Australia’s far east, the beautiful Victorian coastline stretches for 1200km, encompassing wild surf beaches, secluded bays, lakes, rivers, forested hills, high cliffs and many attractive towns and villages. In the western region you can explore the rugged Grampians and visit tranquil agricultural settlements, while the north’s highlights include the mighty Murray River and its old port towns and the magnificent Victorian Alps.
